Canada’s very first WNBA team is seeking public input on everything from the team’s name to colour recommendations, personal anecdotes, and sounds and pictures — basically, anything that encapsulates what Canadians want the team to stand for.
Today, the team launched NameYourTeam.ca, inviting fans to share ideas, hopes, and suggestions for the new team’s identity. Fans have until August 28 to share their opinions on the website or by texting WNBA to 1-833-662-3664. Everything you share will be reviewed by the group of designers and advisors that have been assembled to create the team’s official brand.
“From the moment this franchise was announced, we’ve promised that this will be Canada’s team,” WNBA Toronto Team President Teresa Resch said in a statement. “That commitment starts today, by inviting every Canadian into the process of shaping our new name and logo.”
The team will look at potential names and brand ideas and consult with team partners and leadership to develop a shortlist of options. This shortlist will then be vetted through a full legal review (this part will include a trademark search); any name choices that clear the review will be shared with Canadians through the team’s blog and social channels before the team/league leadership selects a final name!
The entire process should be completed before the end of this year. Make sure to get regular updates on the team’s branding journey by following @wnba_toronto on both Instagram and TikTok.
“Our goal is to create the most inclusive and participatory process in sports history, because we know that we’re not just creating a brand,” Resch added, “we’re building a community.”
In March, the WNBA announced that they were officially coming to Toronto, ending weeks of speculation and marking Canada’s most populous city as home to the league’s 14th franchise.
So far, we know that the team will begin playing in the 2026 season. Its home games will be at the historic Coca-Cola Coliseum — an 8,000-seat arena at Exhibition Place in downtown Toronto, which is already home to the Marlies. It’s expected that additional games may be played at Scotiabank Arena and across Canada.
